Accession of Colombia to the Madrid Protocol for the International Registration of Marks:

On May 29, 2012, Colombia became the 87th member of the international trademark system. Colombia is thus the second country in the Latin American region, after Cuba, to join the International Trade Mark Filing System. As of August 29, 2012, it is possible to designate Colombia through an international trade mark registration.

 

The European Parliament rejects ACTA:

The European Parliament on July 4, 2012 rejected the Anti Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, preventing its ratification by the European Union or a Member State. The vote of the Members of the European Parliament was particularly influenced by strong lobbying on the part of European citizens. The ACTA had been negotiated amongst the EU and its Member States, the United States, Australia, Canada, Japan, Mexico, Morocco, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, and Switzerland. Its objective was to be able to fight more effectively against acts of infringement of intellectual property rights, namely counterfeiting and piracy, by promoting international cooperation and monitoring.

 

AFNIC mandate renewed as Office d’enregistrement des noms de domaine en .fr / Office for Registration of Domain Names with .fr:

Following the invitation to tender, which was issued on March 22, 2002 by the French government, the AFNIC (Association Française pour le Nommage Internet en Coopération / French Agency responsible for registering domain names with the ".fr" extension) has had its mandate extended for a period of 5 years.
