NEW TOP-LEVEL DOMAINS AVAILABLE UNDER THE ICANN PROGRAMME

Last October, we announced the launch of the very first top-level domains under the ICANN programme.

We are delighted to announce the launch of the Sunrise period for the following eight new top-level domains:

  • .properties
  • .maison
  • .condos
  • .bid
  • .pub
  • .tokyo
  • .best
  • .actor

This Sunrise period will last for 60 days and will allow trade mark proprietors to register the domain names that correspond to their trade marks on a priority basis.

We remind you that to benefit from this priority registration you must first register your trade mark in the Trademark Clearinghouse (TMCH).

CHANGES IN ICANN'S MANAGEMENT METHODS

On 14 March 2014, the United States announced their intent to delegate their supervisory role within IANA to the global community.

IANA is the authority responsible for ICANN's technical functions, in particular the management of the databases that include the list of names and addresses of domain names, the supervision and coordination of the Internet's unique identifier system (domain names and IP addresses), as well as the administration of the root zone in the domain name system.

This information does not directly affect Internet users or their use of the Internet. This transfer only impacts the way in which Internet operations are managed.

The consequence of this transfer will be that the global community will supervise ICANN's technical functions on a consensual basis.

The contract that binds the United States and ICANN in relation to the oversight of IANA will end in September 2015.

Until then, it is up to ICANN to submit proposals for the manner in which the transition process will take place. The 49th summit of ICANN, which started at the end of last March, opened the debate on the various potential options, still based on ICANN's multipartite, participatory and transparent system.
