European Patent Office offers automatic translation between Chinese and English
The European Patent Office (EPO) has for some time now offered a "Patent Translate" service in collaboration with Google. This is a machine translation service trained specifically to recognise patent vocabulary. The "Patent Translate" service is available via Espacenet, the European publication server and Google Translate.
The EPO and the State Intellectual Property Office of the People's Republic of China (SIPO) have now launched a Chinese-English translation service of the "Patent Translate" service.
According to the EPO, thanks to the agreement with SIPO Espacenet has grown by about 4 million Chinese language documents, which can now be translated if the description and the claims are available in text form to the EPO.
Using the "Patent Translate" service, English language documents can be translated into Chinese and Chinese language documents can be translated into English. The following videos on the EPO web site show how the service works.
The EPO intends to add further Asian languages in the future, in particular by 2014.
