What is copyright?

Copyright protects works of the mind, such as:

Literary works (novels, poems, articles, etc.)
Artistic works (paintings, drawings, photographs, sculptures, etc.)

Copyright is automatically granted upon creation of the work, but it is subject to certain conditions.
