The CMS is the case management system of the Unified Patent Court (UPC, https://www.unified-patent-court.org). It enables, among other things, the registration of legal representatives, the submission of documents by parties, access to case files, and the filing of opt-outs.
The current version of the CMS has been used since the sunrise period (before the UPC entered into force on 1 June 2023 to allow the registration of representatives and the filing of opt-outs during this period).
The UPC has now developed a new version of its CMS, which has been progressively rolled out since 8 July 2025.
The new version includes two separate applications:
- The Front Office (https://cms.unifiedpatentcourt.org/) allows users to submit applications, and to create and update user profiles.
- The Front Office Portfolio (https://cms.unifiedpatentcourt.org/portfolio) allows users to manage their case files, submit further documents, and view case files and decisions.
Users already registered on the previous CMS are being migrated to the new version. Existing user accounts can be retrieved using the registered email address, but a new password must be created.
For new users (who did not previously have an account on the old CMS), access to the new CMS requires the creation of an account on one of the two portals mentioned above. This process includes email verification through a code sent to the user.
In both cases (existing or new users), the SmartCard previously required for authentication is no longer necessary to access the new CMS. However, multi-factor authentication is required to log in. This is done via an authenticator app (Microsoft Authenticator, Google Authenticator, or FreeOTP) on a smartphone.
It is now possible to create a team or organization and assign roles (drafter, payer, issuer, signatory, representative) to different users.
The full transition to the new CMS will be completed on 23 September 2025.
Until then, only representative registration and opt-out filings are available on the new system. All other actions must continue to be carried out on the old CMS. From 23 September onwards, all proceedings will be handled exclusively via the new CMS.
