New technical requirements for static, dynamic, and animated representations are introduced, along with new file formats, to improve the understanding of the characteristics of European Union designs.
Enhanced protection for European Union designs, although with a limited impact for companies protecting their designs outside the EU, as static views remain a requirement in many countries.

Static representation:
Static views show the physical object from each of its six angles (front view, rear view, top, bottom, right side, left side) and in perspective.

- 10 representations published (7 currently)
- Number of views: only one view per file
- Maximum size: 2 MB
- Restriction: progressive JPEG images are not accepted
Dynamic representation (3D):
A dynamic representation allows the user to view a design from multiple angles, offering a virtually unlimited number of views.
3D file formats are primarily designed to encode the three-dimensional geometry of an object. Some formats are suitable for representing the shape of the object, but are not well suited to representing features related to color, texture, or materials.

OBJ (.obj) and STL (.stl) formats:
- Only one file is allowed
- Maximum file size: 20 MB
The STL file represents the geometry of the object only, without color, texture, or materials.
The OBJ file represents both the geometry of the object and its colors and materials.
Animated representation:
An animated representation can show movement, transitions, or any other type of animation of the design elements, usually through a video, in a continuous visual display.

MP4 format:
- Only one file is allowed
- Maximum file size: 20 MB
The choice of representation method (static, dynamic, animated) is essential and will depend, on the one hand, on the characteristics to be protected (shape, texture, color) and, on the other hand, on the intended extensions abroad.
It is not possible to combine (“mix”) static representations with dynamic or animated representations within a single design application. However, in a multiple European Union application, the object may be represented by static views in a first design (used for extensions outside the EU) and by dynamic or animated views in a second design.
